Apples are the pomaceous fruit of the apple tree, of the Rosaceae family. The tree originated in Asia, but it is now cultivated alla around the world. In Italy, it is cultivated above all in Trentino, Emilia Romagna, Alto Adige, Veneto, Lombardy, Piemonte and Campania. There are myriads of cultivars: Among the best selling ones are: Annurca, Jonagold, Granny Smith,Red Deliciuos, Pink Lady… Crops ripen at different times of the year, but usually from late summer to early winter.
In cooking apples are considered THE fruit. Besides being used to make fruit salad and classic granny cakes, they are also used to make strudels and pies. And of course candy apples, common treat at Halloween.
In Oriental traditional cooking they are also used with savory dishes, for example to make curry chicken.
Fun fact: apples have a high content of fiber. The proverb “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” refers to the health effects of the fruit. Apples may help to controlo cholesterol. They also have a high content of vitamin and minerals.
