Tofu, also called bean curd, is a typical food of eastern cuisines. Even if the name is Japanese, Tofu had its origin in China. It is produced by making soy milk coagulate, then it is pressed into a sort of rectangular block, like some butter pat.

First and foremost, Tofu can be fresh or processed. Starting from this two types, several different varieties are available on the market. Tofu has a high content of vegetal protein and calcium, and low of calories, saturated fats and cholesterol.

Tofu has mild taste and smell, so it is a quite versatile ingredient and you can use it both in sweet and savory recipes. So, you can eat it raw, stewed, marinated, pan-fried, stuffed with fillings, etc., usually combined with vegetables.
